ABOUT

RICH KIRSCHEN M.A.
Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapist

I work with individuals, couples, and families, helping those who are struggling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, or addiction.

As someone who has worked with families for over thirty years and trained in Family Systems Therapy, I bring a deep appreciation for the impact that every family member has on one another. No matter who we are and where we come from, understanding our family of origin, and the family system we live in now, allows us to gain the confidence to become proactive, rather than reactive, fostering a deep sense of relief.

In addition to the freeing that comes with understanding our story within the family context and the wider world, as a Certified CBT Therapist, I will help you gain a deeper awareness of your core beliefs, assumptions, coping mechanisms and the automatic thoughts that affect your behavior.

My approach is one that helps you with Discovery, understanding the systemic patterns that have formed who you are and a treatment strategy that offers you Recovery (a return to your authentic self). I help you understand your cognitive process, so that the progress achieved in therapy is maintained in a carefully crafted CBT Action Plan.

TRAINING

  • Machon Shinui, The Israel Institute for Family Therapy, Herzliya, Israel
  • The FGI Institute for TEAM Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mountain View, CA
  • New York University School of Social Work, New York, NY

STYLE AND THEORETICAL APPROACH

When it comes to therapy, it’s all about fit. Finding the right therapist who provides you with a strong therapeutic alliance is the primary factor in determining success in therapy. I am particularly influenced by TEAM-CBT Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Trauma Focused Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Object Relations. Overall, I work integratively, which means I draw from different theories to suit each individual client’s needs.

Native Born Israelis and Olim

In addition to working with native-born Israelis, I work with clients who have made Aliyah (recently or many years ago) and help them understand their experiences, as well as process issues that arise for both new and veteran immigrants.

Students on Short-Term and Long-Term Programs

I have considerable experience working with students who are here on short-term and long-term programs. Although studying in Israel can be an adventure of a lifetime, immersive programs in Israel can often trigger intense emotional distress for young people who have been taken out of their comfort zone far away from home.
